I don’t like plans. I don’t want to be tied down for two years which I think is ridiculous.  I much rather pay a full price of the phone today and not be tied down to a company.

I also find that you actually save money because the cell phone companies don’t tack on their normal “extra fees” that they somehow are able to get away with with contracts. I think these extra fees are thievery and very dishonest.  The cell phone companies make them seem like they are state and federal surcharges, but they are just a way for the cell companies to reap in extra fees.

So far I think the Boost Mobile plan is very good. T-Mobile also now has plans that don’t require contracts and are similarly priced.  The other providers are starting to lower their fees in hopes of competing with the plans like Boost Mobile.

Though, they don’t have a Blackberry and their phones are fairly basic, a good prepaid cell phone company is Virgin Mobile. I have used them in the past and also liked them. They use the Sprint CDMA network for their phone service.

I think prepaid is the way of the future and in my opinion there is no need to get stuck in a regular contract plan nowadays.

2. Match the plan to your calling habits

Even an infrequent mobile phone user can end up with an unnecessarily high bill if he or she chooses a phone plan that does not match their needs.

To understand your needs consider the following factors:

a. Do you make calls in peak or off peak hours? If you are making business calls, the bulk of your communications may be in peak hours, while if you will be using your mobile phone for social calls you may be able to call in off peak hours. The other problem with capped plans is actually not the fault of the phone companies but is the fault of the typical users. They begin to use the phone much more than they did in the past because they think that they will not be charged for it. In the end they wind up with huge bills. If a company is offering you a deal that includes a free or cheap phone, you will probably be paying for it as part of your contract.
